CAMBODIA : useful information in English 1/3

What we did...What we loved......

 Hotels, Guesthouses, prices, transports...

(for photos of hotels or maps, see the articles below in French, please)

 February-March   2010   Currency : 1€=5600 Riels   1$= 4000 or 4200 Riels

PHNOM PENH and KOH DACH (Silk island)

►Hotels :
- Royal Guesthouse  91Eo, 154 street.  hou_leng@yahoo.com
tel (855 23) 218  O26/ (855 12) 854 806
Good location, in a not very noisy street. Large double room N°1,  on the first floor on the street with AC 15$, not including breakfast. A lot of possibilities of rooms from 10$ without AC. Breakfast : possible on their street terrace ; prices OK. Slow service or order not understood...! Internet access.
Super Star Hotel  172 street, n°26 ( behind the big wat, near the Royal Palace. Very well located in a quiet street. Very clean.
Mail: s_starhotel @yahoo.com    15$ the double room. Some rooms don’t have windows. We didn’t stay but visited a no window room. We met people very satisfied thus confirming it is a good place to stay.
- Paragon Hotel  2198, quay Sisowath. Very good but more expensive, facing the river info_paragonhotel@yahoo.com. Rooms with or without windows. Ex: 23$ the double with AC, no windows we hardly negociated at 20$. Large & beautiful double facing the river, balcony, AC:  38$
KOH DACH ISLAND
Villa Koh Dach, guesthouse on Silk Island :
The Owner, Meng, speaks a little English. 4 comfortable and very clean rooms with fan, and bath. Billard in the garden. Meng’s wife cooks nice full meals, different every day, and it is a good thing you eat here as no other guesthouses on the island, and no restaurant (few tourists).
For any information, contact  French Roger Barthas, on his blog kohdach-info.blogspot.com or http://cambodge.forumactif.com a useful and interesting forum (in French) for travellers in Cambodia.
Double room 15$, breakfast included. No internet on the island except through telephone. Bike renting.
 tel 016 88 4696   mail (through his phone) 1986meng@live.com
A charming place, where you will experiment an authentic stay. Walk or ride, go to the market along the Mekong river, visit an old temple, watch the silk weaving and have a try when you are asked, go to the beach (but pay a fee before reaching it) ! Speak with the school children who want to practice their English, meet the inhabitants… You will feel far away from Phnom Penh ! I would suggest staying 2 or 3 nights.
How to go there : tuk tuk, ferry and moto dop ; our whole trip cost 10$. Tuk tuk from Phnom Penh city center, cross the bridge in the north of town (Japanese Friendship bridge),then go as far as Gold Sun Hotel (ex Chai Hun), on your right, to take the first pier, then  ferry (500R), and  moto dop trip  (negociate price) until the KOH DACH Villa (40mn) during which you can have a first approach of this long island ; some silk weavers ladies will try to make you stop to visit their place during the first part of your trip !
Restaurants in Phnom Penh:
-Friends N°215, 13 street http://www.friends-international.orgTraining restaurant, not far from the national museum.
Nicely decorated restaurant and good food, a bit expensive but it’s for a humanitarian action, thus supporting former street teenagers’ training. (4.5$ ice cream, with banana and chantilly, crêpes and ice cream….so delicious !)

►Massage  in Pnom Penh :
You can find massage salons everywhere: body massage, foot massage with oil or without, pedicure and manicure from 5$ to 8 or 10$ one hour according the salon. Some use better quality oil or cream, or have better qualified masseuses or simply a chic decoration !
we quite enjoyed massage at Sawasdee Massage : south of Independence Monument, N°6B, street 57, Boung Keng Kang 1  (opposite  Khmer Surin Restaurant) - Oil body massage 1h :11$.

 KOMPONG CHHNANG

►Hotel :
- Sokha's Guesthouse tel 026 988 62 / 012 76 29 88
10 minute walk from the city centre.  A two- storey house, colonial style in a big and quiet garden. No restaurant in the hotel, only for breakfast. Large double room with bath, TV, fan 9$
 ►Restaurant :
The only one in town Metpheap Restaurant ( we didn’t see Mekong restaurant -not in town or doesn’t exist any longer ?). Not expensive, dishes from 8000R to 12000R. Very few tourists. It could be an excellent idea to take your English-Khmer language book with you…
►Transports:
-Bus GST Phnom Penh- Kompong Chhnang : 5$.  A minibus picks you up at your hotel. (Same price if you buy a ticket to Battambang. You will be told nobody gets on the bus on the way. Everywhere in the country we encounter this when you buy a bus ticket !)
-Motodops in town. We didn’t see any tuk tuk !
Visit by moto-dops the surroundings : short day visit :10 $  (quay area, 3kms far from centre, floating vietnamese village –extra fee you have to pay to the longboat owner 1h, 7$, pottery village 7kms far...).
- Bus GST Kompong Chhnang- Battambang 6$- 3h30 (it could be longer)

BATTAMBANG

Only 3 rooms with AC or fan, in his house. 15 $ the double room with fan, including breakfast. Visits not included. Free Internet. Better to book in advance ! I would suggest a 4 night-stay to enjoy the surroundings  His tuk tuk driver Seon lives nearby and his comfortable tuk tuk is for 6 people. Sam takes you around for the visits.
Your day excursions are done in tuk tuk or motorbike along red dusty roads, or better roads…. You can try a ride on the bamboo train too. His cultural itineraries are well organized to make you discover rural life activities.A wonderful stay

 Massage :

Park Hotel, The Park Spa : oil massage 8$ 1h, foot massage 5$ 1h

Leaving Battambang by boa : Expensive  - 20$- but worth the 8 -hour trip ! Departure at 7am (but in fact at 7.25. Arrival in Siem Reap at 15.15. Take a tuk tuk to Siem Reap.( but a tuk tuk from your hotel can pick you up)
The level of the water in the river was ok but sometimes the captain had to go slowly. At the departure in battamang you can buy fruits, biscuits, water ... One stop on a floating restaurant where you can buy something to eat. If travelling sitting  on the roof, you can take pictures easily, and have a good view during the first hours (and a good light) before you arrive on the lake . Don't forget your hat !

http://www.treetop-ecolodge.com   tel 011 600 381 / 012 490 333

Just outside the city centre, not far. no problem to walk to town. Charming place with nice big bungalows (6 if I remember wel!) with terraces and hammock, overlooking the valley, and surrounded by cashew trees.

The hotel proposes one day or 2 day-treks, or visits to tribe villages  in the surroundings, with official guides.

►Internet : free wifi  and internet (you can have the owner’s laptop but slow connection).

Cybercafés nearby with good connection.

►Good restaurant  with a large terrace where we had all our meals. Good food and pleasant atmosphere.

►Guides/visits to tribes villages : we met Jammy at Star Hotel, outside the city centre (brother’s manager-different from Mr Leng the owner we have never seen –seems not living here).

Prices paid for one day excursion 10$ for “guide”Jamie, 40$ 4-weels car with driver, 20$ le bateau for 2 people; we shared car and guide with 3 other travellers..

Villages of  tribes Kroeung and Katcha, Katcha cemetery (after 2h trip by boat),Lao and Chinese minorities opposite  Voeun Say. The visit to a Tampoun village couldn’t be done as we spent too much time with katcha people sharing this particular day their funeral festivities . A great moment ! dusty red and bumpy roads.

►Our guide : contact Jammy (his nickname)

seayeen oum (seayeen@live.co.uk)

►Surroundings of  Banlung :  Boeng Yeak Lom   one- hour walk from Treetop to this round lake, or by bicycle. Entrance fees for foreigners :  1$... you can eat in the park.

►transports

Banlung to Sen Monorom, Mondolkiri by motorbike . Yes it’s possible but difficult because of the “track/road”. Think of one-night stop on the way to Sen Monorom. To organize the trip, see Jammy from the Star Hotel, who already organized it with his brother..

KRATIE

►Hotels/guesthouses :

Morhautdom hotel  (Riverside’s neighbour) on the quay facing the Mekong.

012 954 768 / 072 971 666 / 011 214 281

Comfortable room, with fan, bath, hot water, facing the river 8$ (see photo, second floor, on the right). Recent built hotel, but welcome of the owner could be warmer. You pay everyday. No breakfast, no Internet access. The only « noise » you can get is the customers dining or speaking at the night noodle food stands along the Mekong, You can admire gorgeous sunsets on the Mekong from the terrace or balcony next to your room.

U-Hong II Guest house Street 10 n°119, not really on the quay, but in a small street leading to the markets. Rooms  5$-13$ we didn’t see them) tel H/P 085 885 168 / 072 690 0041

You Hong Guest House (same manager?) street 8, a bit further, in the market area.   youhong_kratie@yahoo.com

►Restaurants et night food stands

- U-Hong II Guest house:Good meals and prices ok)We took all our meals here ! Sympathetic place, with full of useful information hanging on the walls.

- Night food stand along the quay.

►Internet  4000R(1$) one hour. Internet access (slow depending at what time at U-Hong II)

Cyber café high speed:further on this street, turn left at the market, a small shop next to a guesthouse

►Money changing – Bank

- Small money-changer shops around the market. You can spot them easily by walking around it.

- Acleda Bank : Preah Sihanouk street. Outside the city centre; Walk or take a tuk-tuk. The big building is on your right, when coming from the market place.

What to do, what to see  ( or not to do ?)

- Stroll along the Mekong, admire the beautiful sunsets

-Everyday life scenes :

Walk along the path down to the bank of the river at about 5pm, time to watch  6 or 7  horses bathing ; some inhabitants too enjoy bathing or washing to get cooler. Some workers repairing boats sometimes. The path starts from north of the town, near the crossroads where a road comes from Stung Treng

-Walk around the streets, to see traditional wooden old houses or colonial style houses (more or less well-kept)

- North of Kratie

You can take a tuk tuk or a moto-dop to go north of the town and see the dolphins. Negociate prices (around 4$) ! Ask for prices (cheaper prices…) at U-Hong Guesthouse or the GH at the bottom of street 10, facing the market.

- South of Kratie :

Negociate a tuk   tuk (We paid around 8$ return way) to go to Chhlong along the Mekong river by a dusty and bumpy non asphalted road (wearing a mask 1600R would be a good idea !). Very interesting to see rural everyday life, in the villages you go through. Authentic. We didn’t meet any other tourists !

 -The dolphins :

By moto-dop :4$ return, then hire or share  a boat (7 to 9$ per person) ; many touts in town propose this excursion. If you prefer to not to take the boat, but prefer seeing the dolphins from the bank, we were told  the fee is 2$...We didn’t go there.

►Transports :

Bus Paramount Angkor Express Kratie - Phnom Penh : 4.5 $ including a small bottle of water on    board ; departure at 7am from Kratie, opposite the hotels facing the river. Very comfortable bus.

►Hotels

Vanna's Bungalows http://www.vannabungalows.com

Charming and comfortable bungalows set on a slope, in a big garden planted of plumerias, hibiscus etc…  with a view on the sea in the distance. Excellent location for admiring gorgeous sunsets !

Our bamboo bungalow with fan was at the back of the resort : 18$ without breakfast. Some are cheaper. Bungalows with AC are more expensive, and concrete built.

Good location near the crab market you can reach on foot. The city of Kep is far away. (see map). No contact with inhabitants in this area, except tuk tuk drivers and people working in one shop, at hotels or restaurants!

Other hotels or guesthouses nearby (Le Bout du Monde…) or near Kep beach (not paradisiac beach…)

- Pleasant walk along the sea from crab market to Kep beach or have a walk in the morning to watch people picking up sea shells, in front of the crab market.

► a shop : Lily Perles, if you like pearls ( all kinds of pearls)

►Restaurants

-  Vanna's :  good food ; nice terrace at sunset !.

- Crab market : not a market but a long row of small restaurants along the sea, with crabs, shrimps, fish on their menu cooked the way you like, generally gilled or fried with Kampot fresh green pepper, delicious but a bit expensive. A few bars and a tour agency. We used to ask for seing before we order, as sometimes crabs are very small, jumbo shrimps are kept frozen, or the fish has already be barbecued a few hours ago…

Prices from 5 $ a dish up to 10$ according to the size of the dish. Example of prices, including beers, between 15 and 17$ the bill for 2 persons.

Our favourite : Kimly Seafood and its neighbour, the last one of the row.

Internet : free at Vanna’s. One PC

►Transports

Bus Phnom Penh - Kep : Departure from the bus station at 9.30 am  (15mn delay only !).

Arrival in Kep (without going through Kampot) at 1.45 pm. Get out of the bus at second roundabout (see the map on French part) if you choose to stay at Vanna's Bungalows ou nearby.

Tuk tuk :

- From hotel to the pier, for taking the boat to Tonsay island (Rabbit island) : the driver asked us for a  return trip : 8$ per pers. And he waited for us at the pier to take us back to our hotel. Very convenient.

If you prefer to buy tickets separately: boat to the island costs 5$ return trip, negociate the tuk tuk trip from hotel to pier at 2$ each way.

-Trip to Tonsay island departure in the morning and return same day at about 4 or 4.30pm; 20- minute trip.

 - Kep- Kompot (25km) including a stop in a pepper plantation on the hill: we negociated the day tour at 15$. Note the pepper plantation we visited nearby kep is not a pepper farm where you can see workers, and having detailed explanation you may want to have…

Nota: if you stay in Kep, you will be picked up,  as it is on the way ! (see the agency)

► Visits in Kampot

Big house where you can watch 2 or 3 workers selecting pepper grains, red or black pepper drying in the sun in baskets. You can buy farm link pepper with a reference number, a guarantee of its origin.

►Tonsay island:

Accommodation: several bamboo bungalows to stay, and 2 or 3  restaurants on the beach where the boats arrive. Toilets. Very quiet ! Beautiful golden sand beach and clear waters ; others beaches on the other coast, sometimes less clean and wilder.

Have a 3 hour-walk around the island, walking along the coast, or along a path (not always well indicated), or through the forest, meet inhabitants of the fishing village, see the seaweeds growing, the mangroves… Not many tourists (who prefer to lie on the main beach)

.KAMPOT

 Guesthouse :

- Les Manguiers : http://mangomango.awardspace.com

One of Lonely Planet‘s favorites. The guidebook gives another website address : http://www.mangomango.byethost18.com          mango@camshin.com

A friend of ours stayed there and really loved the place, although it is outside the city. Double room at 18$

►Restaurants :

- Piggu's,   good food. This small restaurant faces the quay (many other restaurants nearby).

►Walks in Kampot

- Along the quay, pleasant walk with the Bokor in the distance

- Colonial style houses, some well- restored.

We enjoyed the atmosphere of the city centre and regretted not having time to stay here

Guesthouse

- Le Jardin aux Hibiscus (ex réga)

Charming guesthouse with its garden patio ; warm welcome by Anne Laure, the French owner.

  http://www.rega-guesthouse.com/   rega@rega-guesthouse.com +855 12 21 95 05

Located along a street of beaten earth (in the last part) leading to the beach, a few meters further down. Comfortable rooms with fan, around a patio 18$ including breakfast Restaurant on 1st floor ; 2 pleasant sitting rooms where you can have a rest or read.

Many sympathetic restaurants and small shops along this street.

But…. Noisy travellers coming back from the beach bars (not many are open late) at night, at 2 or 4 am. What a shame ! This made us leave this cute guesthouse and stay somewhere else.

Ochheuteal, a long and “beautiful” beach??? Well... it’s a long and narrow beach crowded all along with 2 rows of sunbeds, beach umbrellas, and tourists. At high tide, you will have to walk along, feet in the water. Not very clear water. Moreover it is dirty with its blue sewer tubes not quite hidden into the sand, and going to the sea. In the evening no more beach beds or umbrellas, but armchairs, chairs and tables for dining or drinking. We were surprised to see many restaurants or bars which were already closed at 10pm, except one or 2 open late with loud music. Not a paradisiac beach, that’s for sure !

CAMBODIA : useful information in English 3/3

 Restaurants :
-New Seaview Villa : sympathetic atmosphere, but not necessary to try to practice your Khmer…
-Les Feuilles:  Tola street Beach     http://les.feuilles.free.fr              lesfeuilles1@yahoo.fr

Franco-Khmer restaurant and nice guesthouse, 2 streets behind the beach, away from the other restaurants, on the street leading to Golden Lions Circle. Pleasant and quiet place for dinner or lunch. In this traditional khmer style place, Gerald, the French owner, will be glad to welcome you with his wife. Delicious meals, interesting talks with the owner, good advice.  Nota : settled down in Sihanoukville since 1993, Les Feuilles moved to Tola street. You will find it on your left on the way to Golden Lions circle, before The Wall.

OTRES BEACH    Wonderful, long and clean white sandy beach !

Small bungalow resorts and their restaurants. Turquoise sea ...dreamlike ! Quiet. You can rent a motorbike to go to, or a tuk tuk !

►Hotel and restaurant

Mean Mean Bungalows (also written : Mien Mien) : located in the middle part of Otrès, where tuk-tuks generally stop. Charming and comfortable  bungalows, good food at the restaurant on the beach. We spent a day there, with a couple of friends staying in one of the bungalows. We didn’t sleep here as we had already booked on Victory beach.

►Transports

Tuk tuk from Victory to Otrès Beach : 10$ return trip. We left Otrès beach at about 4.30 pm. We asked the driver to drive along the coast, to avoid downtown, and admire the marvellous  white beaches of Independence and Sokka

VICTORY BEACH

Beautiful, white sandy beach, but not as long as the other ones. Charming, and peaceful. Wider part is near Airport Resort (which is at the back of the beach). Palm trees, and shadow. Restaurants. Clear turquoise water.

New management since Feb.2010 : Isabelle and Raphaël are two sympathetic and energetic French persons.

The resort is located on the street leading to the beach, further down, a few minutes walk .Wooden bungalows – cabana style, set in a huge garden planted with hibiscus, cashew trees, jackfruit trees etc.. on the slope of the hill, with the sea in the distance. What a surprise to find such an Eden place in busy Sihanoukville !  Our cabana was the biggest one, with sea view. 15$ with fan, tv and balcony; It needs restoration I must admit , but the bathroom is tiled.

15$ without breakfast. Other bungalows (cheaper) cost from 6 to 8$.

The only "noises" came from a few talkative persons from a nearby hotel, at night.

►Restaurants :

- Bungalow village restaurant   Very pleasant restaurant and terrace with hammocks for relaxing. We enjoyed the serene atmosphere ! Good meals nicely cooked by Isabelle who goes to the market everyday.
- Koh Lin: in a small street of Victory Hill. French owner. Good meals : Freshly fried calamari with Kampot green pepper, or tamarind sauce are prepared by his wife.

► Free Internet and wifi at Bungalow Village.

Transports :

- Kep -Sihanoukville :      Minibus from Kep (Vanna's) at 8.15 am - Arrival in Sihanouville 2h after.

- Sihanoukville-Koh Kong
Bus Virak-Buntham Express  with toilets on board. Departure at 8.15am (and 15mns delay…) from the bus station : 10$ ( including tuk tuk pick up from your hotel). A 4 - hour trip through a beautiful green landscape of mountains and protected forests. Arrival at about 1pm.

KOH KONG CITY

►Hotels/guesthouses :

The bus station is outside the city and tuk tuk drivers will be so pleased to take you to a hotel, as they often get a commission… 1$ the trip to Koh Kong City Hotel...if you negociate !

Seaside  : (along the quay)

- Koh Kong City Hotel :

http://kkcthotel.netkhmer.com    kkcthotel@netkhmer.com

Pleasant, big double rooms with AC, those with sea view : 20$, street view  ones are a little cheaper, 17$. We didn’t stay here.

- Phou Mint Koh Kong Hotel : next to Koh Kong City Hotel, set in the middle of a wide space looking like a car park. English not understood and not spoken, when we asked for a room. Full, because of Khmer student groups !

- Kolab Koh Kong guesthouse : a short walk from Koh Kong City Hotel : a very good option, with nice comfortable room, sea view, with fan, cable TV and  bathroom : 8$.

Tel. 016  20 23 23 / 099  05 81 81 / 089  47 95 27

 - Koh Kong Guest House, near Kolab KKGH, facing the sea too. Do not mistake with the latter !  : +855 011 821525

Charming wooden-made guesthouse. Rooms on the first floor. We didn’t visit them. You pay in baths and NOT in riels !!! You can book bus tickets here.

In the city

Baan Peakmai : No longer a guesthouse !

- Apex hotel :  Sympathetic 3-storey hotel  with swimming-pool. Comfortable double rooms at 10$. A lot of Cambodian tourists. Representative of Virak-Buntham Express. At the reception desk, free city maps available.

►Restaurants :

- Baan Peakmai : Good restaurant set in a pleasant Thai style garden, at a crossroads.

- Riverfront restaurant: it has got a different name, and is next to Phou Mint, between Koh Kong City Hotel and Phou Mint GH ; you eat on wooden terraces on pile foundation. Very pleasant ! English not really understood or spoken…

- Café Laurent : next to Koh Kong City Hotel (same management ?) ;pleasant terrace surrounded by plants and flowers. Western food, French breakfast. Good coffee. French dishes are expensive here. French breakfast : 4$, 3 croissants : 2$

►Visits and excursions :

- Dive Center
(next to Koh Kong GH) proposes day excursions to Koh Kong Island at very expensive prices (we are far away from Thailand prices). That made us leave the following day !
40$/pers for a day excursion including  Koh Kong Island, waterfalls and mangroves, snorkeling and lunch. We are told the sand flies are on 6 beaches and the boat must go on the 7th.
18$ half day, 30$ another day excursion (per person)

►Transports

Leaving Koh Kong City to Thailand and Koh Chang

- The bus from the bus station is the one arriving from Sihanoukville at about1pm.
Tickets can be bought at Apex or Koh Kong GH. Departure at about 1.15pm.
15$ per person including tuk tuk pick up, bus to the border, minibus to Trat and the pier, ferry crossing to Koh Chang. Very convenient. Departure from 2 different piers.

Nota: the Cambodian bus does not go through the customs ! You have to walk though the customs and your luggage is brought to the Thai side. (Fee for the service if you don’t carry your luggage yourself when you get out of the bus). Waiting for your minibus can take some time, once you went through the customs. You have time to buy some food !
- Ferry to Koh Chang at 5pm, just in time to admire the sunset at the arrival on the island
